In October 2017, we held a creative action fighting against family detention. This month, Michelle led at the Monument Lab Research Field Office at the Barnes Foundation a series of free paper flower workshops, as a part of Seguimos Caminando (We Keep Walking) monument highlighted through Monument LAB.
The series of workshops entitled, "Flores de Libertad" (Flowers of Freedom) invites the public to help create thousands of paper flowers, a tradition passed down by her maternal grandmother, with messages of freedom for the families detained at the Berks Detention Center. Over a thousand flowers will be created and assembled spelling out the 10'x40' word "Libertad" (Liberty/ Freedom) as part of a creative action at City Hall in late October with the Shut Down Berks Coalition.
Michelle's monument and creative action honors the mothers previously or currently unjustly detained at Berks Detention Center, a prison outside of Philadelphia for immigrant families.
