Michelle will join the roster of 22 artists including Mel Chin, Hank Willis Thomas, Zoe Strauss, and more in the Monument Lab project. The project is a nine-week citywide public art and history project co-produced by curators Paul Farber, Ken Lum, and A. Will Brown and the Mural Arts Philadelphia. Each artist will create temporary public art in 10 locations across the city.
She will be envisioning a monument informed by the voices and stories of women unjustly and indefinitely detained at Berks Detention Center, an unlicensed prison outside of Philadelphia for immigrant families. I will be working in cooperation with the amazing Shut Down Berks Coalition. Many families have been incarcerated for over a year now and the center continues to operate despite documented accounts of medical neglect, verbal and physical abuse.
