Paul Farber of Monument Lab interviews Michelle Ortiz about the new phase of her Familias Separadas project on the Pennsylvania State Capitol steps in Harrisburg, and around the city.
Ortiz had the pleasure of sharing the stories behind her work through the Monument Lab podcast. It is an honor to be featured in this podcast along with other artists including Hank Willis Thomas, Stephanie Syjuco, and Kirk Savage. Hear about how the "Familias Separadas" project came to be.
Ortiz has worked to bring the stories of these detained mothers to prominent public spaces where powerbrokers may connect with stories of these mothers in new ways – including last year at Philadelphia’s City Hall as a part of the Monument Lab 2017 exhibition.
Ortiz currently holds fellowships from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, the Rauschenberg Foundation Artist as Activist program, and as Kennedy Center Citizen Artist. She regularly partners with organizations like Juntos and Shut Down Berks Coalition.
